The Village of Oakland, Rhode Island — Recreation Hall Residence
Adaptive Reuse, Design | Build, Construction
I had the incredible privilege of collaborating on the complete renovation of this historic Recreation Hall, originally built in the late 1800s, with two extraordinary owners—renowned furniture designers Tucker Houlihan and Christine Enos. This project was a true labor of love, transforming the space into a stunning residence while honoring its rich history and architectural character.
The renovation encompassed every aspect of the interior: demolition of existing spaces, raising a timber loft to create a new second floor, and building out a custom kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room, and communal living areas. Every detail was meticulously crafted, with the architecture itself treated as a piece of fine furniture. For instance, the joinery of the loft members was celebrated as a design feature, blending structural integrity with artistic expression.
Over the course of three years, I contributed to the design, demolition, and construction phases of this remarkable transformation. The result is a space that seamlessly marries history, craftsmanship, and modern living. My heartfelt thanks go to Tucker and Christine for inviting me to be part of this magical project—it was truly unforgettable!
