Colorado State University Morgan Library
Wayfinding, Environmental Graphics, Interior Architecture
Colorado State University’s Morgan Library underwent a significant transformation, including renovation of the existing structure and a two-story, 13,000-square-foot addition to its north entrance. Designed to offer expanded seating, enhanced computing resources, and ample study areas, the design emphasizes the creation of a Learning Commons. This innovative space equips students with access to advanced support services in a technology-rich environment.
The renovation also draws inspiration from the library’s original mid-century architecture. Elements such as mosaic patterns, vertical linear features, and coffered designs have been reimagined to convey movement, curiosity, and vibrancy. These details are woven into the environmental graphics, enriching the library's modern identity while paying homage to its historical roots.
Strategically positioned at the heart of campus, the Morgan Library serves as a central hub for individual scholarship and collaborative learning. The new design revitalizes its presence, offering an inviting entry, seamless indoor / outdoor connections, and a design that respects the library's pivotal location. Sustainability, simplicity, and efficiency are integral to the architectural approach, reinforcing its role as a modern academic landmark.
A key feature of the renovation is the "Energy Chamber," an iconic space that symbolizes the evolving academic paradigm of serendipitous discovery and collaboration. This aesthetically striking venue fosters a sense of connectivity among students and faculty while enhancing their ties to the broader CSU community.
